Yet Another Scam! From Community Messaging

“An email is received which appears to be from a friend or colleague asking you to buy a number of gift cards – Google or Apple Pay. The email will usually be from someone you know (their email will have been hacked) and explains they can’t buy the gift cards themselves because they are in a meeting or can’t get to the shop but that they will pay you back as soon as they can.”

Ring them on a landline to check, if you believe it might be from them! Needless to say, if it isn’t, delete the email and don’t click on any link.

Nature & Environment

The National Trust:

Have conducted a huge piece of research using five years of visitor data with the results revealing what the future of UK tourism might look like due to climate change.

While it is no surprise that people flock outdoors in warmer weather, there is an optimum temperature of 21C, but at most of the places we care for, visitor numbers start to decline above 24C, and dramatically reduce when temperatures reach 28C.

We are likely to see far more of these high temperatures, especially if carbon emissions aren’t cut. We’re using this data to equip the places we care for, both historic indoor and outdoor places, for changing weather patterns to ensure their future for nature and people. Read more on our website

Business News & Information

A Scam targeting Businesses

Shared by NYorks Community Messaging; they warn of a scam email that is received by businesses (they don’t say if they are targeting specific individual email addresses). It says there are files ready to download and to log-in using your employee credentials to gain access.

Needless to say there will be files – containing all sorts of nasty surprises!

A reminder really to make sure IT training is thorough and for IT departments to be vigilant.

STAYING CONNECTED

Mashamshire Community Office works hard to keep you up to date with the latest information and items of interest.  We keep you connected in the following ways:

This newsletter for Locals, which is produced weekly – Usually on a Wednesday or Thursday – we would send a short “e” bulletin if there should be anything urgent.  Contact us if you have feedback or would like to contribute info.  Print and pass on to anyone without email.

The Mashamshire Community Facebook Page dedicated to sharing community news.

The Visit Masham Facebook Page which, though aimed at visitors, is a useful source of info about great things to do locally.

The VisitMasham.com which contains loads of information for both locals and visitors including a Directory of businesses and local groups, Events and community news.

All of these are only possible with the help of our wonderful volunteers.
……………………………………..

CAN YOU HELP?

Our paid staff only amount to just over two FTE posts, we couldn’t do without help from volunteers.  Our statutory funding covers a fraction of our staff hours.  This leaves the remaining hours plus ALL our overheads, most of which we cover by generating additional funds ourselves from things like ticket sales, advertising, the Flock Gallery and Town Hall bookings etc. We certainly couldn’t do this without our volunteers. If you have time to spare and would like to support us, please do get in touch here.

These difficult times demand we do more, but our income-generating is limited by Covid.  So, here’s a way to give something back to Mashamshire Community Office and help ensure we can continue our work for Masham.  Any help is so much appreciated – click to donate online or if you prefer, please call us on 01765 680200.

Kind regards

The Team At Mashamshire Community Office
